How it Started

Teela was originally a tech demo for a client who wanted us to play with AI and see what it could do. This client, in particular, was constantly asking us for new queries, new reports. Honestly, it was a bit much. :)

What created the spark to explore?

This client, in particular, was constantly asking us for new queries, new reports. Honestly, it was a bit much. So when we thought about what AI could bring to the table, solving that painful problem seemed like a potential solution. A few weeks later we had an awful prototype. Truly it was bad, but it showed us a glimmer of what was possible so we kept poking it and showing it to other clients. Each time we would show it to another client we would see them light up "if it can answer THAT... then I can finally know the answer to THIS". Seemed like we might be onto something…

Over the next several months, Teela began to take shape.

How do we build this, the right way?

With each step we have worked with the following ideals in the forefront of our minds:

  • Keep it simple. Our target is the non-technical business user. We want to give them superpowers, not overwhelm them with jargon.

  • Show our work. Transparency is key to building trust, so we built features like Explore (that shows how each calculation was derived) and SQL view (which allows users to see and edit the SQL that created the results).

  • Secure by design. Teela doesn’t work unless we earn the right to access a customer’s data. To earn that we have built several layers that prevent Teela from ever doing anything but answering questions about your data. Even if specifically asked, Teela will never manipulate data, only query.

Where did the name come from?

The original prototype for Teela was an internal project. Something to cut our teeth on with AI as it were. Being internal, we didn’t have to follow strict rules about the name… so one of our devs (Jeff) made a crack about “having the power…” and the rest just fell into place. Soon, our 80’s childhoods came roaring to life. Our API was called Battlecat and our Web application was named Teela.

As the application matured, the name of He-Man’s beautiful, strong, and courageous sidekick just stuck and the rest is history.
